There are many beautiful rivers and lakes in Victoria.

People enjoy activities such as swimming, fishing, boating, kayaking, picnics and more.

Rivers and lakes can have hidden dangers.

I will tell you about common dangers and easy tips to stay safe.

Danger: Strong currents and fast-flowing water.

Stay safe: Throw a leaf in the water to check the current speed before you get in.

If you get caught in a current, float on your back feet first. Don’t panic.

Danger: Invisible objects under the water.

Stay safe: Check how deep the water is.

Enter water slowly, feet first.

A snag is a hidden object under water, like trees or branches.

Danger: change of condition over time.

Stay safe: Weather can cause the conditions to change over time.

Don’t assume it’s safe just because it was safe last time you visited.
